Here are five major instances in the history of the Indian Premier League where the franchises spent a lot of money but didn’t get the desired outcome as they failed to fulfil the requirements of the team or the big boots in which they came to the side.

#5 Mohammad Asif | $650,000 | Delhi Daredevils (2008)

This was the only edition of the IPL where Pakistani players were allowed to play and Mohammad Asif is one those few Pakistani players who were lucky and got an opportunity to play in this million dollar league.

But, Asif didn’t take the full advantage of this as he just took eight wickets in the eight matches that he played. In those eight games, he bowled 32 overs at an economy rate of over 9.

#4 Mashrafe Mortaza | $600,000 | Kolkata Knight Riders (2009)

Many people are not even aware of the fact that former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza was a part of the Indian Premier League with the Kolkata Knight Riders during the 2009 season.

Mortaza failed terribly with both bat and ball and ended up playing just a solitary match in the entire season. In that match, he scored two runs with the bat and while bowling, he conceded 58 runs in his quota of four overs.

#3 Pawan Negi | INR 8.5 Crores | Delhi Daredevils (2016)

Pawan Negi had a decent edition in 2015 season with Chennai Super Kings but as they were not in the 2016 edition, Negi went into auction pool. Delhi Daredevils bought him for a heavy amount but that proved out to be a disaster for them as he scored just 57 runs with the bat at a strike-rate under 100 in eight matches that he played. With the ball, he took just a single wicket in those eight matches with an economy of over 9 runs per over.

#2 Tymal Mills | INR 12 Crores | Royal Challengers Bangalore (2017)

This would be Royal Challengers Bangalore’s second-worst buy after purchasing Yuvraj Singh in 2014 for ₹14 crores. Mills was bought in IPL after his successful time at the three-match T20I series against India for England.

But for RCB, Mills could only pick five wickets at an economy over 8.5 and average close to 30 in the five matches that he played for them.

#1 Yuvraj Singh | INR 16 Crores | Delhi Daredevils (2015)

Another purchase by the Delhi Daredevils appears in this list and no one ever thought that Yuvraj Singh’s name will ever appear in a list of this kind. After spending one year with RCB, Yuvraj moved to DD but had a terrible time there as he could score only 248 runs in the 14 games that he played in the entire season at a paltry average of 19. With ball as well, he took just one wicket at an economy rate of over 8.
