While some movies are both creepy and funny, like the horror comedy genre, there are many dramas that will make someone’s heart race and send a shiver down their spine. These flicks feel just as scary as the most unforgettable horror film.

Darlene Davis (Kate Beckinsale) and Alice Marano (Claire Danes) are best pals who travel to Thailand, but the movie is terrifying right from the beginning as they meet a charming man who puts drugs in their bags. They end up in prison, which would be horrifying for anyone but is particularly terrible and frightening considering that they have just graduated high school. They have no idea what to do next and watching their journey is as scary as any horror story.

Unlike movies with satisfying endings, Brokedown Palace is emotional and devastating and will stay with audiences forever. It’s scary to think about the position that Darlene and Alice are put in as they’re naive and innocent and had no idea that this was going to happen to them. Both actors give amazing performances, especially Kate Beckinsale, who starred in the action-comedy film Jolt and has proven that she can star in a variety of movies.

Based on Jon Krakauer’s 1996 non-fiction book, Into The Wild is the real-life tale of Chris McCandless who decided to hike in Alaska. The story had a tragic ending as Chris had trouble finding food and as he spent his last days living in a bus that he found, he struggled with starvation.

Emile Hirsch delivered an awe-inspiring performance as Chris, who ate poisonous berries and ended up passing away. While Into The Wild isn’t a horror movie based on a true story and it’s a drama, it’s horrifying to watch what happens to this young man who had so much ahead of him. He felt called to spend time in nature, but realized that it was nothing like he had anticipated or imagined.

While Wild, the adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s beloved memoir, isn’t anywhere as scary as horror TV shows or movies, it’s still unnerving to see the character taking on the Pacific Crest Trail when she doesn’t have hiking experience. Cheryl forges ahead with confidence, running through tough memories of her mom Bobbi (Laura Dern) who passed away and her ex-husband Paul (Thomas Sadoski).

There is a particularly scary part of the movie where Cheryl is dehydrated and it’s awful to imagine what she’s going through and how freaked out she must be. Cheryl is victorious in the end and is thrilled about the experience. The PCT can definitely be dangerous and scary at points and someone else might not have been so lucky as battling the elements can go very wrong.

Margot Robbie is perfect as Tonya Harding in the 2017 film I, Tonya which examines the talented skater’s rise to fame and fall from grace. The true story is horrifying in a lot of ways, as Tonya’s mother LaVona Golden (Allison Janney) abuses her, which is tough to watch. Movie fans are excited to see Margot Robbie play Barbie as she has shown her talent in many films. The film is a comedy, but it’s still hard to see Tonya mistreated.

What happens to Tonya is also scary. If she really did hurt Nancy Kerrigan (Caitlin Carver), then that’s terrible to think about it. If she was innocent, then it’s just as awful to think that she was banned from competitive skating, the one thing that she loved in the world. Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly is the one who planned Nancy’s attack, and Harding pled guilty to “hindering prosecution” and stopped skating, according to The LA Times.

There were many important movies in 2020, including Host, the horror film about friends chatting on Zoom and finding a supernatural presence. There was also Promising Young Woman. Carey Mulligan plays Cassie Thomas, a 30-year-old woman who is grieving the death of her best friend Nina, who was raped. There were no consequences, and the movie delves into this terrible reality as this happens all too often.

Cassie wants to help her friend and fix a system that is tragically unfair and devastating. The fact that this does happen makes this film absolutely terrifying and sad to think about. It’s also scary watching Cassie’s journey and what happens to her as the movie has a horrifying conclusion that is hard to stop thinking about.
